This set of Pounamu taonga was created to sit alongside the bilingual children’s book I Gaze Up at the Trees with Dirt on My Knees, written by my wife and published here in Aotearoa.
Each of these taonga features a design of three interwoven lines. This pattern symbolises hononga – connection. These connections are at the heart of the book and of these carvings:
Connection between people
Connection with te taiao – the natural world
Connection with the creatures we share this land with
These carvings are a physical expression of the story’s message. Just as the book encourages tamariki to explore, notice, and care for the forests, rivers, and wildlife of Aotearoa, these taonga carry the same reminder – to value the relationships we build with others and with the land.
Each piece is individually hand-carved from genuine New Zealand Pounamu and finished with care. The design is simple and strong, suited for children or adults, and can be worn, held, or kept as a taonga to mark a special connection or moment.
These taonga are perfect as:
A meaningful gift to go with the book
A reminder of time spent in nature
A symbol of connection for schools, kura, or early childhood centres sharing the story
